Steel tubing makes an excellent choice for many applications since it offers a great deal of durability, strength, and affordability. These are used in trucks, handrails, and trailer manufacturing. The main material used in the manufacturing of steel tubing is ‘steel’. Steel is mainly constituted by iron. There are other metals that you can find in steel such as manganese, tungsten, aluminum, vanadium, titanium, and zirconium. There are other materials that are often used in the finishing processes in trace amounts. These materials may be painted, if the pipes need to be coated. There is a light amount of oil which is applied to the pipes at the final phases of the manufacturing process. Oil is used for the protection of the pipes. Sulfuric acid is also used in the manufacturing process, though it is not a necessary part of the finishing product. The main purpose of using it is to clean off the pipe.
How are Steel Pipes Made? – Manufacturing at Unity Metal Industries
There are two main processes that constitute the production of steel pipes. The main method involves three steps. First, raw steel is taken and then converted into a form that is easy to work with. After that, the pipe is given its shape on a semi-continuous or a continuous production line. In the end, the pipe is modified and cut to meet the needs of the customers that purchase from Unity Metal.
Molten steel is made by melting coke (carbon-rich substance) and iron core in a furnace. Then most of the carbon is removed from the molten iron by blasting oxygen into it. The molten steel that is formed is then poured into huge, iron molds with thick walls. It is then cooled to form ingots.
To make sheets or plates which are flat products or to make long products like rods and bars, the ingots are placed under a lot of pressure below large rollers.
Making Slabs and Blooms
The ingots are rolled into slabs that are pretty similar to bloom making, which we are going to talk about next. The steel is passed through two rollers which force it to stretch. There are other rollers present on the sides to control the width of the slabs. When the steel forms into the desired shape, the manufacturers get rid of the unwanted ends and the blooms or slabs are cut down into littler parts.
For the production of bloom, the ingots are passed through two steel rollers that are grooved and stacked. These particular rollers are known as “two-high mills.” There are cases where instead of two, three rollers are used. They are mounted in such a way that the grooves overlap and move in directions opposite to each other. Because of this action, the steel is stretched into longer, thinner pieces. When a human operator reverses the rollers, the steel gets even longer and thinner. The operator repeats this step until the desired shape of the steel is reached. When this procedure is underway, machined known as manipulators keep flipping the steel so that the processing is even.
Steel Tubes Processing
The processing for blooms goes on a little more until they are brought on to be made into pipes. The blooms are put into more rollers to make them narrower and longer to convert them into billets. Then flying shears are used to cut the billets. These shears are synchronized and are a pair, they go along with the billet as it moves and cut it. This allows the cutting of the billets to happen without halting the manufacturing process. They are then stacked and converted into pipes.
Slabs are also processed. In order to make the slabs malleable, they are first out into a furnace and heated to 2,200°F (1,204°C). We began to see an oxygen coating on top of the slab because of this process. To break this coating, high-pressure water spray and a scale breaker are used. These slabs are then brought to a set of rollers that are on a hot mill and then rolled to create very narrow strips which are called skelp. The length of this mill can reach up to half a mile!
As the slabs go through the rollers, they keep getting longer and thinner. In about 3 minutes, a single piece of steel that is 6 inches thick can be turned into a steel ribbon that is a quarter-mile long!
When the steel is finished stretching, it’s then pickled. How does that happen? Well, its placed into a set of tanks that have sulfuric acid in them which helps clean the metal. As a finishing step, the metal is cleaned with hot and cold water, dried and then sent off to a pipe making facility after the packaging process.
Making Steel Pipes
Billets and skelps both are used to make pipes. Skelps are often used to make pipes by welding. Initially, they are brought to an unwinding machine. The steel is heated as it unwinds. After that, the steel is passed through a set of rollers that are grooved. When the steel passed by the rollers, the edges are bent in a way that it forms an unwelded pipe from the skelp.
The next step involves the steel passing through the welding electrodes. The machine that seals both ends of the pipe together. Then it passes through the high-pressure roller that makes the weld a solid one. The pipe is then stacked after being cut to the length of choice. This process is continuous and it can be made to work as fast as 335.3 m (1,100ft) per minute, depending on the size of the pipe.
For the manufacture of seamless metal pipe, square billets are used. They are molded into a cylinder shape after being heated, which is also called around. The round is then placed into a furnace, in which it is heated until it is white-hot. The white-hot cylinder is then rolled in a high-pressure machine. The pressure causes the steel to stretch out and form a hole in the center.
The hole formed does not have a definite shape, hence a bullet shaper is used to push through it to make a proper hole as the billet rolls. After it has pierced, the hole may be regular by the shape or thickness of the pipe will still be out of proportion. To make this into perfection, the steel pipe is then passed through another set of rolling mills.
Final Processing Phase
When either of the pipes is made, they are passed through a machine that straightens it. They are also fitted, if needed, with joints that make it easy for the pipes to connect. The more common types of joints that are threading that have smaller diameters which are tight grooves that are carved into the pipes at the ends. A measuring device is also used for the size appropriation of the metal pipes. All of this information along with other data regarding quality control is printed or engraved on the pipes. After that, some protective oil is used on the pipes as protection. There are treated in certain ways that keep them from rusting. This can be done by giving the pipes a coating of zinc or galvanizing. Various paints may be used on the pipes depending on what kind they are.
There are different steps that are taken to ensure that certain specifications are met by the steel pipes. X-ray gauges are used to make sure that the pipes are at the right thickness. One ray is directed at the steel passing from the production line and the other is directed at the steel of known thickness, if there is any difference recorded on both rays then the rollers are automatically triggered to resize.
Pipes are searched for any sorts of defects that may appear. A special machine is used for the inspection of such defects. This machine fills up the pipe with water and then keeps on building up pressure to make sure that the pipe can bear it. If any pipes are defective, they are returned to scrap.
